WHAT IS BILDUNG?

Yeehaw is a Bildung cooperative committed to continuous learning, personal growth and social change.

Bildung, also knowns as folk-bildung, is a term derived from German, which translates to "people's education" or "popular education." It refers to a concept of education that emphasises the development of the whole person, including their intellectual, social, and emotional growth, as well as their engagement with the community and society at large.

Folk-bildung originated in the early 19th century as a response to the rapid industrialisation and social changes that were occurring in Europe. It was a movement that sought to provide education to the working classes and promote social justice and democracy through the development of critical thinking, creativity, and individual empowerment.

Folk-bildung emphasises the importance of learning through experience, including hands-on learning, group work, and practical problem-solving. It values a broad range of knowledge and skills, including the humanities, the arts, and the natural sciences.

Today, folk-bildung continues to be a popular concept in Europe, particularly in Scandinavia, where it is seen as a key component of social democracy. It has also influenced educational movements around the world, including in the United States, where it has been associated with progressive education and community-based learning.
